Maybe the character is written in a way were it seems the have a goal but is revealed that goal was fake and they were acting on another goal all along. Maybe they don’t say out loud there motive but through there actions the reader assumes there goal.

Actually, I have done something like this in my first draft and it is a major plot device. I like the idea and I hope I manage to make it as believable as possible. Thank you for the suggestion!

Ambiguous thoughts will keep the reveal from happening too soon. As for the reader understanding their motivations, they don’t need the information up front. As long as your MC is acting consistently, they’ll wait to find out why. Even in your real thoughts, you don’t often think outright, “I’m going to act this way because my family is missing.” Instead, you can include lines like, “The ache in my chest burns deeper today. Usually an ever-present throbbing, the sight of a yellow rain coat on my walk to work this morning stabbed me through the ribs. My head had whipped back in a double take. Even after all these years. Even though I knew it couldn’t be. I thought I had a handle on this.”
