Will I be fined for collecting my dead cat?

Not a lawyer but used to work in animal law. No the local authority fine people and even then there’s hardly ever been any cases as microchipping isn’t in the public’s best interest to prosecute and costs too much to make it worth their while. The vet practice can probably give you the body back to bury if you cannot afford a cremation. Sending my condolences

No vet worth their salt would even make a comment about a microchip at a time like this. They'll just be happy that the cat was reunited with their owners and they are not left behind wondering what happened to their beloved pet. Contact them as soon as feasible and they will let you know when you can go and collect them or advise you on their cremation services if that's something you'd prefer.
