Some background info:
Since the dawn of time humanity has always known about the supernatural, whether it be through myths and legends or through scriptures and crazy rantings. However most religious groups barring Shinto, Taoism, and Hinduism, were either quick to bury them under the label of devils and devil worshipers. It was not until around 1187 that the first reported encounter with a supernatural was received by them, indicating an encounter with a supposed nine foot tall monster, coated in a fur so thick that no arrow or sword could pierce it, ambushing and leaving only 2 survivors of the initial group. These reports were quickly dismissed by the church citing it as heretical ramblings, yet a similar report was given to the Sultan at the time indicating a connection between the two.
The survivors of the intial attack seemingly unable to forget their experience began a tour around europe investigating and documenting incidents similar to the one they'd experience. It was not until they'd encountered another creature described as an unholy amalgamation of a bat and a human that they began their secret campaign of slaying them. Their campaign did not however merely end at europe as they'd discovered in the distant lands of the east, groups had formed far more experienced than they were at handling these creatures. Armed with evidence and knowledge of the supernatural, this group had intended to warn the church of this threat only to be perceived as a threat themselves and most of them executed.
The few that didn't however continued their studies of the supernatural travelling all over the world, learning of their strengths, their positions within society, and most importantly their weaknesses. One of which the group relied on the most being called 'holy zeal' an ability which had somehow nullified magic and even some supernatural abilities as documented by their encounters. The group members now consisting of several different beliefs and having the backing of high ranking religious orders named themselves the collective continuing their work all around the world. Spreading their numbers and continuing their work attempting the eradication of all supernatural kind.
It is rumored that during this time most supernatural groups had grown to fear them, one of the most prominent ones being the vampires of Europe. Sensing the danger they possessed and using the influence they had to cause conflicts between religious groups, spread propaganda ensuring the world of the supernaturals non-existence (one of the most famous ones being the novel Dracula), and of course branding members of the collective as heretics or criminals. This severely impacted their capabilities to operate in several regions of the world and forced them to resume their operations secretly.
It is not know what exactly happened during this period of secrecy but it was rumored that after the formation of the second vatican council. The groups had officially formed with its members now spanning across the entire world with plans of taking back several parts of it from supernatural control. Now as they've discovered however while they have the physical means to do it, their biggest weapon is no longer as viable as it used to be with more and more of humanity losing faith and devotion in their god, far fewer people have the ability they relied on.
