When colleges overstate how close they are to a major city

When I was looking at colleges for undergrad and now as I’m researching college for grad school, I have noticed some schools (especially colleges in rural areas) will make it sound like they’re close to a major city when it’s well over an hour drive. For example, some colleges I’ve visited in Virginia have tried to make it a selling point that they’re close to DC, and the only colleges this would make sense for is colleges in northern Virginia, however I’ve seen colleges in the most rural parts of Virginia try to act like they’re not that far from DC when they are more than an hour away.

Another time, I was attending an info session for a college in Philadelphia, and one of the advisors said they’re close to DC when Philly is about 3 hours away from DC. I get that a 1-3 hour drive to a major city is very doable, but if it takes more than an hour to get there it’s not really close.
