Moraxella catarrhalis - antibiotics or not?
Male, 31.
Sorry for the long message. Thank you for reading it.
I was sick for a week - fainting, low-grade fever, slight cough and a terrible runny nose. The condition improved, but the runny nose and occasional cough with secretions remained. It's already day 14.
On Monday, I did a nasal and sinus swab (although apparently it wasn't from the sinuses, but "deeper from the nose" - but that's what they called it in the laboratory). Nothing came out of the nose. Maxorella Catarrhalis emerged from my sinuses - quite numerous colonies. I was sure that I was going to the doctor for antibiotics and that the diagnosis was basically made. The doctor says that there is no need for antibiotics and that it is normal that something came out due to a runny nose, and that the smear itself is an unreliable test.
Now I'm confused whether I should actually get the antibiotic or not and whether it's good that I'm not taking the antibiotic for this bacteria. I also read that it occurs more often in people with chronic diseases, which started me worried whether I was suffering from something I didn't know about and that's why it stuck.
I basically have two questions:
- Should I take antibiotics in this situation?
- Does infection with this bacteria mean that I may suffer from something?
Thank You <3
