Tell us about the wine preferences of where you live
I've lived in 3 different places long enough to form an opinion... This is just based on what I've exposed to at the time I was living there, but would love to hear more about you guys.
Obviously for most wine consumers it's just people who don't care that much and would happily drink whatever is on sale without thinking twice, so let's describe the preferences of people who care about wine.
California (Bay Area) - I think there's a very strong preference for California wines. The big brand labels do quite well for casual wine enjoyers (Meiomi, Opus One, etc.,). I'd say wine market is relatively more mature since there's some history, so it's quite likely to see people have a wine cellar built into their house, and have some collection of California Cabs. Again, just overgeneralizing, but that's kind of what I perceived. Most people have probably gone to Napa as some sort of vacation even if they don't care about wine then might have gotten a bottle or two as a souvenir.
New York City - Quite a nice wine market in my opinion - it's in between Europe and California/Oregon, so wine lists and wine stores will have a healthy collection of American and European wines. Lots of very cool wine stores including those neighborhood hip wine stores to some bigger ones like Astor Wine & Spirits. Personally where I fell in love with wine.
Hong Kong - I'd say Hong Kong falls most into the cliché of how wine is like this snobbish rich people activity, but I think that's kind of baked into the society it's in (Hong Kong people are materialistic, and Western things like wine are considered luxury/high-end), so people who position themselves as wine lovers are mostly drinking high-end Burgundy/Bordeaux/Champagne, and might not care much for wine outside of that.
American wine selection is quite irrelevant IMO, but there's quite a lot of Australian/New Zealand stuff coming in to meet more of that casual wine market.
