Elphaba's dance choreography
Just to preface, I havent ever seen the play but I enjoyed the movie a ton. I think the scene that felt like it made the most impact emotionally on people was Elphaba's dance at the Ozdust Ballroom.
Through some light research I found people saying the dance was played as more comedic in the play. IMO I think the change was really beautiful, and did a phenomenal job of showed without telling. It created a very vulnerable moment by making the audience feel the uncomfortable "cringey" feelings the rest of the crowd was supposed to be feeling, and made Glinda's choice to step in despite the social pressure that much more impactful.
The part I wanted to bring attention to is that the choreography of Elphaba's dance feels very intentional. I'm pretty confident a lot of the movements were based on the wicked witches movements when she was introduced in the original Wizard of Oz. Specifically when the witch is standing in the middle of the crowd of munchkins, she points and leans towards the munchkins and they avoid her very similarly to what Elphaba does. This is primarily the movement that stood out to me, but it has been a long time since I've watched the Wizard of Oz.
If there is something connected to the play past the tonal shift of this scene that I missed, I would love more interpretations! There's also a chance I'm looking for connections because the scene made me feel feelings!
