6th Infantry Division (Light) Missed Opportunity
Missed opportunity for the LARP with this division. I present: the XM1 LRIP No. 8 "Yukon Jack"
"U.S. Army XM1 LRIP Test Vehicle nicknamed "Yukon Jack" during Cold Weather Testing at Fort Greely, Alaska, circa 1980 (late fall).
It should be noted this tank was painted in the MERDC "Snow Temperate, with trees and shrubs" experimental camouflage scheme.
The nickname for this tank came from the tester's favorite Alaskan drink, with the alcohol proof raised from the brand's 100 proof to 105 proof which coincided with the caliber of the tank's main gun.
Prior to its entrance to service, every major M1 Abrams variant is subjected to extensive tests in extreme weather conditions to ensure it functions as it should wherever in the world it could be called on to serve. In this case, this XM1 underwent testing in the cold and dry sub-Arctic Alaskan weather.
This kind of testing has played a vital role in keeping the M1 as one of the most capable Main Battle Tanks in the world."
