Sucking up

One of my TLs is wanting to step down and she told me she wants me or my other coworker to take her place and she asked me about it first and I told her I would. She also said she wasn’t sure if my coworker would even want to do it. How much sucking up do I need to do and how do I do it because I don’t agree with kissing ass to climb the corporate ladder.
