My city's flag celebrates slave owners.
This is Mogi das Cruzes in Brazil.
The two figures holding the coat of arms are bandeirantes, "hunters" and traffickers of enslaved indigenous people. Monuments that honor slave owners and murderers are constantly criticized here in Brazil, but these images still persist.
What ideas would friends have for redesigning the flag and coat of arms?
I love the flag, the three colors are a constant to exalt Brazil's cultural matrices (African, indigenous and European). The snake smoking a pipe is a wonderful tribute to our WWII veterans.
Even the plants (tobacco and sugar cane) bother me because they also evoke our colonial slave past. We are proud producers of mushrooms and orchids.
Now this exaltation of the bandeirantes is absurd and I would love to offer an alternative for us to change.
