Multiple bases?

Do you make just one base and have a hut with a portal in other areas? Or do you make fully functional outpost bases with all the craft stations and all the amenities and make it fully fortified with stone covered earth walls and all the defenses? I am currently making major forward base number three. In addition to my main home base. Why am I spending hours upon hours doing this?. I don't really know. Because I can? That's the best answer I can give.
