Spending 3 days in Yangshou - general location to stay?

Planning on about 3 days in Yangshou this coming June, and deciding on where to book a hotel. We will be arriving via high-speed rail from Guangzhou.

It seems like the biggest cluster of hotels is around the main Yangshou town area (e.g. the pedestrian West St), and there are also some hotels that are north of there, closer to the 20 yuan scenic point/Xingping ancient town/rail station. If most of good restaurants and interesting things to do are closer to the main town, then I probably would want to avoid needing to take a 1hr taxi down there from a further hotel.

People who have visited, where do you think is preferable to stay? Here is how I'm thinking about it so far:

North of Yangshou/near Xingping:

- Prettier views of mountains

- Maybe less crowded / loud

- Short drive to train station (maybe just 10-15min)

- Not sure how much of a draw the Xingping Ancient Town is

Yangshou main area/near West St:

- About 50min drive to train station

- More restaurant/bar options and more walkable areas around

- Easier access to attractions, whether bike tours, hiking, or river cruises

Please let me know if you agree or disagree with the above!
