Rural and less trafficked destinations with nice landscapes and classical architecture
I have a pretty specific set of preferences, and am hoping for recommendations for places that meet them.
I like quieter, more rural places that are less touristy. I don’t like party atmospheres, especially bars or clubs. I developed some pretty bad problems when I was younger and worked hard to get away from that stuff, and I just don’t like being around it.
I also prefer to go to places where the locals do not resent tourists, digital nomads, passport bros, etc. I understand the problems that tourism can cause for people, and I do not want to contribute. For example, Barcelona seems incredible, but I am not sure that the climate is right for me right now.
I also like old cultures and civilizations, and in particular, impressive and well maintained classical architecture. Statuary, art, and museums are also a plus.
The one place that I have been that exemplifies what I am looking for is Sicilia, in particular the interior of the island, rather than the touristy towns and cities on the coast.
In Ragusa Ibla, I ran in to an old man who did not speak a word of English, but was clearly very excited to see a tourist. He gestured me to follow him, and despite having some reservations I did. He led me to his pottery studio, and showed me a bunch of pieces. He gave me a terra cotta Trinacria, and a small dish painted with an olive tree - and he would not accept money for them.
In a small village in the Madonie mountains, people were gawking at us like they had never seen someone from outside the village. I played chess in a plaza with a very dapper and well dressed old man, who then took us to the nearby trattoria, and absolutely insisted on paying the bill. He at least acquiesced and allowed me to pay for cappuccinos.
Of course, the landscapes were incredible, and the architecture beautiful (though less impressive than in Rome or northern cities).
Can anyone recommend any places with this kind of vibe? I have also had a lot of success with Türkiye, Iran, and Armenia (but I have family there so it is a bit different). I am thinking that some countries in Central Europe and the baltics may be good candidates, or perhaps rural Greece.
