I’m new. Can someone explain the Cougar. It’s the only predator whose location is shown on the map? Is an encounter with it a guaranteed immediate death?

I’ve been walking in a circle for days in Pleasant Valley, finally found the cave system I need to get to so I can enter the winding river…but the Cougar is near my exit. I’m playing custom with the settings set to “far” for the animal scent range.
