Even as a big fan of Medvedev it's jarring that his resume (1 Slam + 6 1000s + 1 ATP Finals + a handful of weeks at #1) is currently the best of ANY player born in the 1990s. It's like if Roddick was the best player born in the 1980s or Michael Chang was the best player born in the 1970s.
Out of the other top 90s born players:
Thiem: Just 1 Slam + 1 1000 (he has a great record against the big 3 but that by itself isn't worth 5 1000s and an ATP Finals)
Zverev: 7 1000s + 2 ATP Finals + Olympic gold (great resume but winning a Slam and being #1 are literally the two biggest accomplishments in tennis so make a big difference)
Everyone else (Tsitsipas et al.) is well behind resume wise
So basically there are literally no ATGs born in the 1990s (unless you're being really generous but I don't think anyone considers the Med/Roddick tier of player to be all time greats)
I realize that part of this is playing against the big 3 but it's not even like 2017-2025 is remotely an era on par with 2008-2016 (in fact right now the field is quite soft) and one would think that players in their primes could fare at least a little bit better against the big 3 in their mid 30s or Sinner and Alcaraz in their early 20s
Basically it's the first generation to do worse than players who are both after their peak AND before their peak while being in their own physical prime
What factors do you think led to this?
