Emotionally drenching books that span a character's life (i. e. A Little Life, The Heart's Invisible Furies)

So, I've just finished the latter book yesterday and I'm overwhelmed and again are looking for books that leave you speechless. They might include: - a long timespan, following the character over decades, experiencing him change over that time - controversial topics and difficult situations - friendships or relationships that are special - the roughness of life so to say. I don't want a rosy, cheesy novel, I want to suffer along with the characters. I'd really appreciate if you'd name some more books like that! Thanks in advance!
