Do closers have to stay late unpaid?

There’s been multiple times during closing where we think we’re finished, the shift has us clock out and then they forget something and ask us to stay until they’re done (clocked out). Sometimes it’s only a few minutes, but I ride Lyft and I start collecting late fees if I make my driver wait longer for me.

One of my shifts talked to me today about how us staying late because things got forgotten is just “part of the nature of the shift” . He was questioning me on if I would stay if my Lyft was here and he told me I couldn’t leave.. I said yeah of course, but honestly that kinda made me feel weird. Why are closing baristas always expected to stay later than scheduled PLUS the extra few minutes unpaid if the shift forgot something.. is that normal at your store?

Is he right? Am I not being a team player for not being chill about the extra few minutes? I was always happy to stay if I really need to.. but I always saw that as me going above and beyond NOT because it is “expected of me”.
