Norway in Nutshell help

Greetings fellow travellers!

I'm visiting Norway early next month and planning to do the Norway in a nutshell tour by myself to get a taste of the fjords. I was planning on going from Oslo towards Bergen and was initially thinking of starting late afternoon from Oslo, getting to Flam and staying overnight. Then take the ferry to Gundvagen the next morning and on to Bergen from there.

However, reading many posts on Reddit/TA and elsewhere it seems there is not much to do in Flam, especially in the evening, and the accomodations are very expensive. The only reasonable place I found was Brekke Gard hostel and it has very mixed reviews. I found some cheaper places in Aurland but looks like no easy way to get there in the evenings without a car.

Basically my question to the lovely folks who have been on this route before is - would it be better to start earlier from Oslo and just complete the whole NiN tour in a single day ending up at Bergen or is it worth spending the night in Flam?
