Followers and frameworks

In all the years I've been playing and modding Skyrim, I've never bothered much with additional followers or follower frameworks. I've basically spent the past 13 years chilling with Lydia and Sven.

I want more character from my followers, better engagement and to use them more effectively, rather than just using them as pack mules and cannon fodder. I want them to adventure with me.

So I'm asking you guys for your favourite followers and frameworks, rather than spend hours scouring the Nexus. I am open to followers from other sites but really not into the saucy stuff. Romance is fine but no "special favours" needed...

On that note, there is another post on the sub regarding female followers, so I'll be keeping an eye on that.

My next character is a Dawnguard build, so any that fit a dark/gothic theme would be a good start.

Bonus: If I like someone but don't want them following me anymore, I may want to keep them around. I know you can make them a Steward or marry them, but I'm thinking other options, like have them join the College so they'll always be there or let them live in one of my homes as a guest, for example.

My GFX card is coming later today, so I can finally get back on Skyrim and I'm looking forward to your suggestions.
