Do americans view themselves as superior to other cultures?
I grew up totally exposed to american pop culture. From music, to movies, video games, everything. This created for me the idea that the USA was the pinnacle of civilization and if i wanted to have success in life, one of the methods was moving to the United States.
However, as i got older i started noticing how society in America was divided, specially through politics and race. Yeah, no joke. When you’re younger it’s harder to see these societal aspects but in parallel you start questioning the reality of the country you live in too. I noticed how many americans have maybe subconsciously this segregationist mindset, that some people “can’t mix” with others, maybe because of race or religion or another aspect.
The first impression that comes to mind is that if i ever arrive in the US the first thing people will do is label me as a latino and all the bad things i could do to the country and i should know my place.
My background is very different, whenever someone from another country arrives in Brazil, people immediately want to integrate this person onto the society or get to know more about their culture. This means everything’s perfect? No! There’s still the sentiment of segregation here but waaaay less tense than i would imagine in America.
And that’s what i wanted to know. Because of the mass exporting of american culture through the world, do americans view themselves as superior in any way?
