Any good Scifi books about intergalactic politics or building realtions (alliances or wars) with alien races?

I have read a lot of Asimov, PKD and a lot of classic scifi novels, but I have just started watching Star Trek and was wondering about any books about the whole politics of different races and intergalactic nations.
