San Francisco hispanic community history

I am writing a screenplay set in 1950s San Francisco with a Latino as the central character and I was wondering if any residents could provide context as to what san francisco was like at the time for the latinos that lived there? For instance, while segregation was no longer legally allowed in the state of california by the 1950s, how long did it take for schools to integrate? Asking because my character is in high school. Any first hand information is greatly appreciated.
