Black and white thinking is ruining media

I saw multiple comments on a post about The Righteous Gemstones the other day complaining about how disappointed they are that the show has given sympathetic backstories to its rich megachurch family because "They need to take these grifters to task."

They're literally complaining that the show has created well-round characters with depth. This is despite the fact that the show has, over and over, shown that these are selfish people who live inherently hypocritical lives. But the show has also gone out of its way to show even selfish families came from somewhere, have real emotions, had real hardships growing up, and at times have genuine moments of faith amidst the grift.

This reflects real-life human experiences, which should be seen as a sign of good writing, but instead the show is written off by these people because it isn't as simple as "bad guy is bad." We need to shut everything down and make people read fiction again, my god.
