Just got ambushed by a wolf pack after finally getting a perfect cougar pelt before I could bring it to my horse. What was your worst luck story?

I was waiting for seemingly hours to get the perfect cougar pelt. Either couldn't find a cougar, it was only 2 stars, or I couldn't get a clean kill. Finally got a perfect clean kill and after I skinned it and was bringing it to my horse, almost a dozen wolves jumped me and killed me. Wtf.
