How does forgetting plot works?

I've been wondering this for a long time, how does forgetting the plot in a dr works? I was thinking of adding this to the script, but I have doubts that if i shift i'll just feel weird? (Dr: Gravity Falls)

I mean, i was planning to add non canon events, but is no fun if i know what happens. I wanted to script that so i wouldn't get influenced.

Any tips? Storytime by the ones who actually did it.
