Feeding frequency of ragdoll kitten

I know this is asked a lot, but I have a 5 month old (4 days into 5 month old) ragdoll that is 8.6 pounds. He seems to have a little bit of a fat layer over his ribs. Should he still be free fed? He’s kind of a really big boy. Took him to the vet and they were flabbergasted that he was only 5 months. He is active. Fed 1/2 can wet food a day (can’t seem to get him to eat a ton of wet food so I add quite a bit of water and goats milk) along with free fed kibble. Debating cutting down on the kibble so he gets some more wet food and hydration.
