Help with straps

Hi all! I’ve made several of these quilted bags to gift to friends, just one problem I can’t solve. I do a separate lining so that I can have a pocket. But once I attach the straps, it inevitably looks like this inside. Can I add the lining after the straps? I feel like it would be hard to do the binding that way. What am I missing?
