Pune from an outsider's perspective
For context, I recently moved to Pune from Delhi, and I have to say—I’m already in love with this city.
Before coming here, I’d seen a lot of negativity about Pune on this subreddit—traffic, bad infrastructure, rash driving, and so on. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
But honestly, my experience has been the complete opposite.
The people here are so kind and polite. Whether it’s shopkeepers, auto drivers, or just strangers on the street, there’s a certain warmth that I haven’t experienced in many other cities. Shopkeepers, in particular, surprised me—they’re patient and genuinely seem to enjoy showing you their products. They even say things like “thank you” or “sorry” while talking to customers. It might seem like a small thing, but it really does leave a good impression.
And about the traffic—I’ve seen people complain, but trust me, it’s nowhere near as bad as Delhi or Gurgaon. Sure, there’s the usual chaos you’d expect in any Indian city, but it’s manageable. Coming from Delhi, this actually feels calm in comparison.
The air here also deserves a special mention. After spending years in Delhi’s smog, breathing in Pune feels like a gift. I can’t say it’s perfect, but it’s definitely lighter and cleaner. My lungs are already thanking me!
What I love most, though, is how there’s always something to do. Whether it’s exploring small eateries, visiting scenic spots, or just enjoying the green spaces, Pune has this perfect mix of energy and calm.
I know some locals say the city has changed a lot over the years, but from an outsider’s perspective, Pune still has so much to offer. It’s a beautiful place with beautiful people, and it feels like a city that genuinely makes you feel at home.
To all the locals who feel disheartened by the city’s issues: trust me, you still have something really special here. Pune is still one of the best places in the country, and I feel lucky to call it home now.
Cheers,
A happy newcomer
