Why do parents think they know everything?

My parents believe that gap years will look really bad to adcoms, based on their “several hours” worth of research. I’ve been in heated arguments with them explaining why I have a low chance of getting accepted with my current app and need to take 1-2 gap years to strengthen it. They think I’m stupid and I just want to scream…
