The revival of old games
I'm very much into nostalgia when it comes to games, i often play some of the old ones still to this day. And i have found that one way to keep the old games alive is by modding and communities keeping the game up to date - with the old spirit of the games. And perhaps r/patientgamers is interested to go into the rabbit hole together with me.
Re-Volt
The newest one i have started to get into. This is an old racing game where you play as remote controlled cars, living the childhood dream of having cool races with your friends. It has so much charm and has a very timeless look, it does not feel outdated at all. But do not let the childish theme put you off, because this game is hard - as in i rarely get in the top 3 spot against the CPU. But when i win, it feels so good. This game is still being worked on with RVGL, where you can download new maps and cars as people are modding the game. They have almost daily tournaments.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2
Everyone knows this game, but if you don't, you have to build a themepark - simple as that. This is my favorite game to just watch some series or youtube and just relax. While having the beautiful machine of a themepark running, smooth as butter with tiny people walking around and enjoying themselves to their hearts content. This game has been improved so much with OpenRCT2. Which keeps the core the same, but expands so much with more things to do, expanding usability, making the game multiplayer and having twitch integration. All of this brings this timeless classic truly to the year 2020. The only downside as that it requires the original game to be used.
Total annihilation
Amazing RTS game, where you control robots and build huge armies to fight each other. It feels like having the transformers war on cybertron. This game does not hold up as well as the others on the list where it can feel a bit clunky at times, but still looks and feels great. With an amazing score by Jeremy Soule. This game is being made into a new version with Total Annihilation: Zero, where the game is expanded with a new faction, updated gameplay, UI and more. It might feel like to much compared to the original game - but if you are interested, give it a chance and you will not be disappointed.
The old Command & Conquer series
Games like red alert was a cornerstone of my childhood, where the Tiberian dawn, red alert and dune 2000 is being build from the ground up to support modding with OpenRA. Where it seems like it has a online multiplayer comunity. I hope to dig into this when i feel like i have the time to do it. I just wanted to bring some attention to it.
I hope some of these old games peaks your interest and hopefully you find out the 'good ol' days' can still be experienced. But i am eager to know if there exists more communities for old games like this and would love to hear r/patientgamers thoughts.
