Proper way to be road raged at

I am fairly new in New Zealand (3 years to be precise). Today I was in my lane waiting for traffic signal to turn green. I heard some honking behind me. I checked if I was the one honked at. I was not, so I continued being lost in my thoughts.Then I heard some noise behind me. I saw a guy breaking side mirror or car just behind me. Then that guy walked away. The car with broken mirror did a U-turn and ran away. Now, the car behind has the guy who broke the mirror. All this made me think, what's the correct response to being a victim of road rage? Should you report to the police? Can you claim insurance? Can you beat the other guy or ask them to pay up? Feel free to be funny!
