Why is The Fifth Element such a beloved movie?

I watched it the other day and it seemed like a regular movie to me. I didn't get very into it because I thought the girl was annoying, and Bruce Willis was too masculine and too emotionally distant to be relatable. What is it about this movie that draws people in?
