Life of pi?

I took the movie for what it was ..that he was with the animals for real and in the end he provides the reporter/that guy with an alternative story that is believable which had humans in it to make it sound realistic… And now I just watched a reel that said he was with actually with humans and made up the animal version to protect his sanity?!!! What?! Which is the correct one? I don’t know what’s more traumatic? The family dying in front of him on a sinking ship or the mother (orangutan) dying because the cook (hyena) killed her in the boat in front of him?!

EDIT: Wow , I didn’t realise it was this deep , I just watched it for the vfx, now I am realising how god / faith connected to the story! Thanks for explaining guys!
