How on earth does the MGRR senator Armstrong leadup fight work?

Trying to beat in on revengeance mode. Specifically the part after he snaps your sword. I know you have to get hit at some point, to trigger the next part of the fight, but if you get hit at the wrong time you just get instakilled. Is there any way to know what the conditions to trigger the final part are?
