Issue with Airbnb

Hello - I was wondering if there is anyone who could give me some advice on what to do next regarding my recent ‘issue’ with Airbnb. To what I’m sure will be an extremely shocked community here, I’ve had a problem that their support term was unable (unwilling) to help me with. My problem is:

My wife and I wanted to take our daughter into the city this weekend. We figured staying in there would be easier so we booked a 2 night stay for the weekend. Found what I thought would be a really nice place, read everything carefully. Host wanted a picture and who was staying in the apartment, which is fair enough so I booked it and sent what I needed to send.

Host returned my message and said that due to recent issues with previous guests they now wanted identity documents (my drivers license essentially) to verify my identity. I said I wouldn’t be sending documents with that sort of personal information on it and that if they were insistent on it I was happy for them to cancel my reservation and I’d book somewhere else. Unfortunately for me this host has a no cancellation policy so I’m unable to get a refund. But I also can’t actually go to the Airbnb unless I send them what they are asking for (and after this weird experience I don’t want to anymore). Anyway we went back and forth for a while, I even offered to show them my license when we met up in person but was adamant that I wouldn’t be sending personal identification documents to some random I didn’t know.

Then I sent a message to Airbnb support explaining the situation. Long story short despite me providing them with screenshots of what was originally in the listing description they told me they could not refund my money and if I wanted to cancel the reservation I would be subject to their cancellation policy (I know this bit off by heart because it was sent to me three times in a row). I’m now at the point where I’d like to find out if there is anything else I can do. I believe I’m in the right for two reasons (and I pointed both of these points out to the support team who just ignored them):

1) Airbnb’s terms of service point out that you are eligible for a refund if the conditions change as per what you agreed to. I was happy to provide a photo and who was staying in the apartment, which was requested in the original listing. It did not state that I needed to provide legitimate identity documents when I booked it.

2) Airbnb’s own terms of service also ‘discourage’ you from sharing this information with people in the first place. As Airbnb already has verified my identity I can’t imagine in what circumstance I would need to provide it again anyway and that regardless of my claim or not, they shouldn’t be allowing hosts to request this information in the first place.

Now, we aren’t in the position where $400 something dollars will bankrupt us, which we are very fortunate for. And I know that there probably isn’t anything more I can do at this point about it. But that might not be the case for someone else and if I can push this issue a little bit further I would like to as I don’t believe they should get away with it. Has anyone experienced these types of issues with Airbnb before and if so, what could I do from here?
