I almost killed a patient

I am on my first month of my rotation in the emergency room, and a patient came in with hemopneumothorax, so i had to do the toracostomy, i knew the right way to do it but the physician in charge told me to do it in a very different way, long story short the patient ended with a perforated lung and a massive hemotorax, the surgeon had to do a sternotomy and the patient is in ICU, i think the lesson is trust in your knowledge, still feeling sad and anxious
