The various sites where 3rd cranial nerve can be damaged
When a patient develops a third nerve palsy, the localization can be in
- the oculomotor nerve nuclear complex in the midbrain,
- the fasciculus in the brainstem,
- the subarachnoid space,
- the cavernous sinus,
- the superior orbital fissure or
- inside the orbital cavity.
