Need help

So I used to play mech area 2-3 years ago and then left it because I had to focus on my studies. I came back recently and saw that there has been a lot os changes and a lot of new mechs/weapons have been introduced. What should I do now? Which weapons and mechs should I buy? What are mods and how do they help us in game?
