Mildly disappointed in my M4 Mac mini
I will preface by saying that I do absolutely love my base M4 Mac mini. It is so fast compared to my modest mid-spec, three year old gaming PC. The DAC in the headphone jack is also quite remarkable. And the reason I actually bought it — macOS!
The biggest disappointment is however this low-pitched humming/buzzing noise that is constantly emitted from it; even when the Mac mini is powered off it still persists. And it is only exacerbated when I turn on my monitor (connected via HDMI). This isn't anything unique to my mini, as seen here and various posts on this subreddit and beyond. I've tried to rectify the issue by: making sure my power cable has grounding — which it does; I've tried disconnecting the cables and leaving it to sit for 10 minutes; tried different HDMI cables.
I would return it except for the fact that I've read that others have returned their units just to receive a new unit with the exact same problem... Plus, this Mac mini was purchased in the USA and is here with me in Ireland now. So, I am beyond the 14 day return window.
Hopefully this humming/buzzing noise isn't a symptom of a bigger problem that will occur in the future, since it's likely that I will just begrudgingly, stick it out.
Also since we're here, another thing you should be aware of before purchasing a Mac mini is your monitor. I am using a 27" 1440p monitor and while the scaling is good, the font rendering is not. This can be mostly fixed by using BetterDisplay and enabling the HiDPI option — oh! — it also allows you to adjust the monitor's brightness and volume output.
To conclude: be aware that if you're allured by the praise of total silence that the Mac mini often gets — that may not be the case with your unit! Maybe it is because of this promise of total silence that the fan noise from my gaming PC is more tolerable to me than this humming/buzzing noise that is coming from my Mac mini.
