Is there anyway of overcoming the "Black Screen of Death" problem of refusing to turn the screen back on with an Imac running Sonoma?
Hi all,
In short I've run into the Kernel Panic which triggers the "Black Screen of Death" problem where the Mac doesn't restart its screen after coming out of sleep mode (I tried turning Sleep off last night as a temporary work around but I obviously missed a setting as it still slept after about 60 mins whilst I was having dinner). In short the thing (brand new Imac) still works but the screen doesn't switch back on.
The major issue - this happened on the 3rd full day of ownership after never having a problem with 20 years of owning a Mac - of a brand new M3 Imac so I'm thinking refund at this point? Where this problem also doesn't appear to be isolated I'm almost thinking I need to buy a basic PC as a temporary work around? (as it's been known this problem happens on Macbooks and now I've had it on an Imac). It would be mildly irritating if you can hold the power button in and just restart the machine (& frankly having to force restart a machine out of sleep isn't ideal or good for it) - but that doesn't work (e.g. I tried it 3 or 4 times, before holding the button in to switch it off - could see the power going off on the keyboard and pulled the power cable out for peace of mind). Weirdly it worked on the 2nd attempt about 15 hours later - but I couldn't then stop it sleeping & I'm back to square 1. The screenshot is what I got when I finally got the screen back on.

In short is there any kind of workaround here as at this stage I'm thinking I need to go the refund route (& I'd even be willing to take a loss to a degree just to get something back). I'm just mindful I'm in the 14 day refund window and don't want to get stuck with £2K (as I upgraded to 1TB, 16GB) of junk effectively that I can't use. In the circumstances I'm thinking I'm going to have to go the PC Route for a couple of years to cover off my needs (my previous Imac was 12 years old and losing browser support this month and was rather cranky).
