How do we know the Light The World machines actually work?

Hello,

My wife told me her coworker saw an ad about the Light The World machines. However, he's not religious at all and is a bit more skeptical about everything. He asked her how do we know that the money from the machines actually go to that cause? I don't think it has a tracking system but I don't see why the Church would lie about a $5 chicken? And what would be the best way to reply to this question?
