Stupid question. Since laptops usually only have 1 HDMI input, can you connect two different monitors that will not just mirror the laptop screen but show their own screen?

I saw that was the case when looking it up. That some might only be a mirror image if the laptop doesn’t allow more than one external monitor. How do you know when looking to buy?
