Do you think these were planted to shield the HVAC condenser units?

Not sure if there is a good way to trim these or keep them looking good, but I’m debating on just leveling the area and planting something else or laying down rocks. They keep growing into the units.

Any idea what the thought was here when the owners planted these? Maybe to hide the HVAC units from sight? Or block them from getting dirt/debris blown onto them?

What would you do to this area to make it look better?
