My thoughts on Ruby

WARNING : May contain spoilers

I was really excited since Jennie is my bias, so my expectations were high.

Among the singles, Extral was my favorite (I love Doechii, and the song is really good). I honestly expected more of that style in the album, even knowing it would have some experimental tracks. Here are my opinions:

  1. JANE (Intro) – It’s good, but since it’s just an intro, there’s not much to expect.

    1. Like Jennie – Weak for a title track. I liked the instrumental, but her voice sounds too robotic, and the rap feels “forced”—she ends it sounding out of breath. The idea was good, but the production needed more work. And sorry, but a title track being only 2:00 minutes long is embarrassing.
  2. Start a War – I loved it! It gives off SZA vibes. One of my favorites.

    1. Handlebars – Very pop, and Dua Lipa would fit this song perfectly. I liked it!
  3. Way Up – Not really my vibe, but the production is great. This could have been a better title track than Like Jennie.

  4. Extral – My absolute favorite, no complaints.

    1. LH – I just don’t like the ending, and I prefer the solo version.
  5. Mantra – I’ve listened to it too much, so I’m a bit tired of it, but it’s still really good.

  6. Zen – More about the visuals than the song itself. The instrumental is nice, but the lyrics don’t make much sense lol.

  7. Damn Right – Very soft, and the voices complement each other well. It’s in my top 3.

  8. F.T.S – I expected something different based on the title, but I liked the song.

  9. Filter – Unfortunately, one of my least favorites. It feels empty, and Jennie’s voice sounds really different.

  10. Seoul City – Too much autotune, but I LOVED the vibe. Jennie really put effort into this one.

    1. Starlight – One of my favorites. Her voice sounds so soft and beautiful—I’ll definitely listen to this more.
  11. Twin – A very personal and well-produced song. The lyrics are beautiful.

My compliments:

Jennie really put a lot of effort into this album, and I recognize all the work she put in. She deserves all the success and recognition.

The songs truly sound like “Jennie.” I can see her in the lyrics, the instrumentals, and the composition. The album’s aesthetics are beautiful, and the collaborations were very well chosen.

My critiques:

I found the songs a bit weak—not bad, but like they were missing something. Again, I know she tried something experimental, but it really sounds more like a pop album focused on instrumentals.

I also think this album could have been split into two—not because 15 songs are too much, but because some feel out of place. It’s different from Rosé’s album, which follows a clear direction.

Final rating: 7/10.
