fellow tourists, have you noticed more aggressive marketers trying to sell their stuff to you?
the carpet, leather, jewelry sellers, and the "hey you look Turkish, do you wanna go get a drink?" guys who send people to the markets to try and convince you to buy their stuff. It is something that has gotten progressively worse and more annoying each time that I visit the city. In 2013, no meant no, and that was the end of it. 2015, you needed to be a little bit more stern than a polite no before they left you alone. 2017 is when I recognize it get drastically worse. A tourist literally cannot sit on a bench without being harrassed by market sellers. Now 2021, its the worst of all. They literally follow you, and they will NOT take no for an answer, and pretend to take it personally and cause a scene when you tell them to leave you alone. I get the market is bad and the lira is down, but that gives no one an excuse to behave that way. I know I probably have no sway, but Istanbul locals, you really........really need to do something about these sorts of characters. It is actually scaring people away from enjoying your city. Because of this most recent experience, I am probably done visiting until I hear from others that it is getting better.
Has anyone else noticed this unpleasant change in behavior over the past few years?
