Is there a way to stop updates?

Every other month or so, I have to update my iPad, and delete a lot of things to free up space. The thing is, I don’t want a new update, I’m fine with the features I have. But if I don’t install the update, nothing really works anymore, so I’m forced to update my Ipad. Can I fix this?
