I cooked lasagna for the first time!
Hi everyone. I have always been an experimental cook from an early age and like to cook food as I'm a foodie myself. My dream is to travel around the world and try different types of authentic cuisines. So this year I made a pact to cook something every Sunday. My 2nd free Sunday and I planned to cook some lasagna. This was my recipe I got some online and some from chat gpt- For sauce - 1. Canned tomatos 2. 3-4 cloves garlic chopped 3. Dry basil 4. Oregano 5. Chilli flakes 6. Salt/pepper I roasted the garlic in a pan in olive oil, added crushed tomatoes with the above spices. Simmer at medium heat. The sauce tasted well in my opinion.
For ricotta filling - 1. Ricotta cheese 2. Fresh Basil leaves 3. Salt/pepper
Mixed everything together. I've never tried ricotta cheese before so it tasted like mixture of paneer (cottage cheese) and curd. The filling tasted a bit bland for me as I am used to processed cheese which is much salty in taste. However I wanted to follow the recipe so didn't add anything else.
For veggies - I cut eggplant and zucchini in long slices, topped it with olive oil and salt and pepper and roasted in oven 200°C preheated for 20 mins. This process wasn't done properly as the oven stopped spinning multiple times which affected the roasting process. Also I think I put too much slices on the tray on top of each other which also led to undercooked veggies. But I was really tired so I used them as is.
For pasta I used ready to cook lasagna sheets so I just had to layer them directly out of the box.
I layered the lasagna as follows sauce -> pasta->ricotta -> veggies I put two layers and ended with sauce and mozzarella and grated parmesan on top. Since the oven wasn't working properly, I cooked everything on stove with closed lid for 20 mins. It went for a little over 20 mins which caused the bottom portion to get burnt.
Overall it tasted decent. As for improvements, 1. Undercooked veggies. Need to cook them properly and well placed while roasting. 2. Lower amount of veggies as they overpowered other stuff. 3. Ricotta filling needs more flavour for my taste so I think adding some mozzarella, parmesan and maybe processed cheese could give it more flavour. Rest everything looked fine to me.
