Cage Topper Help

My niece & nephew have recently gotten gerbils and their mum (my sister) has asked if I could make a cage topper for them. I've seen some where it's wood batons with mesh filling in the gaps which is probably the way I'm going to go. My questions are what materials should I avoid? Would it be safe using marine plywood for platforms and ramps? Thanks folks.
