What's the best "Legend of heroes" game in the Nihon Falcom series?

What's the best turn-by-turn JRPG from Nihon Falcom, I'm especially thinking of the "Legends of heroes: trails ..."
Do we need to play them in order? Or can we pick one separately from the others? (and what is the order if there is one?)
