When are the things that you do reflected on the cover screen and when are they not?

So I heard that when you video record someone, that person can also see from the cover screen that they're being recorded. Is this a default feature or you have an option to enable/disable it?

I wouldn't want people behind my phone to see everything that I do when I'm using the inner display.
